For die hard Nokia fans, in a couple of days hopefully they will be able to enjoy what is now touted to be the Finnish Tech company’s Flag ship mobile device. If my friend Dorothy Ooko and her team at Nokia are right, it is a must have gadget. So I shall be making many many many calls to my people at this office in Ngong Road…..ha well to why the flagship.

Nokia N8 is by most of us geeks the now officially the Nokia flagship mobile device. The N series gadget data range and general aspect is impressive and boasts of GPRS/EDGE class 33, 3G, HSDPA, 10Mbps,WiFi 802 and a lot of stuff.

The memory also offers the user unlimited entries and fields in the phone book. The internal memory is 16GB, 255MB RAM, 512 MB ROM. You can also buy additional 16 GB memory.

The display has a multi-touch input method with proximity sensor for auto turn-off Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate and scratch resistant Gorilla glass.

The camera well for you who are constantly snapping this way or that way is 12 MP, 4000×3000 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Xenon flash.

With such features (check out full specs on, I see why it is indeed the brand new pennant from Nokia. But to know how it tastes I will have to connect with it. Hope someone heard that cry for the N8. Ken, Dorothy….anyone?

Anyway it’s about to dock, grab one if you can. It’s a must have. Price range on or near  50k

It seems as many commentators have said; Kenyans are always queuing for something. Last Wednesday we lined up for the referendum and it went well, today I started the day by queuing for the bus then when I got to the central business district I had to line up in the banking hall for some banking stuff.

Apart from the monotonous video adverts and the bank’s CSR videos nothing ever jostles ones heart and leaves a bad taste as when someone answers their mobile phones while in the banking hall.

Some of this people will hurriedly whisper on their mouth piece that they will call back. But then there are some people whom I must say at first really ticked me off but over time I just stand in awe and just laugh.

Just sample this

Phone rings and the ring tone are surprising when you see is hurriedly trying to get the phone. The ringtone is a rendition of Abba ‘dancing queen’ and the lady getting the phone is in her mid fifties standing next to her friend same age looking at her and asking in a not so quiet way ‘where did you keep that thing its making a lot of noise people are looking at us’

At this point the friend is obviously louder than the phone and people are just chuckling at the action. Oh if you happen to be in Africa and standing next to a lady past 50 years of age (my mother’s age mates), you will by default become a shelf as she hands you stuff from her bag while she searches for something.

Once the mobile device was found, using her bifocal spectacles she holds the device at arm length and tries to redial the missed call.

Lady ‘halo who is this oh it you………we are still in the queue……no do not give them any more sodas….. I don’t know but its moving…. ‘At this point the bank manager starts walking towards her. She is talking to everyone in hall now.

Lady ‘no there are only two on the counter… of them is Martha’s grand daughter……I cannot cut the line even if she is my niece’. At that moment the manager decides to serve them personal. As they walk away the friend just says ‘I told you that thing was making way too much noise…but I like the song how can I have it on my mine?’

Now sample the finest of all

Man is standing just behind 4 people before he is served phone rings… and he is not subtle and lets everyone hear his conversation

Man ‘Listen that man you brought to me was a thief…..instead of fixing my car her ransacked my car and stole my spare wheel……now tell him am connected and I will hunt him down and lock him and his family….I do not like thieves.

The man moves forward and stops using the phone at the counter but doesn’t stop being loud.

Man ‘I said I want 10 thousand…ati my cheque bounced….’ at this point the cashier is forced to be louder at him. ‘You have to see the manager this is your third bouncing cheque this month. And in a quiet voice close to a whisper the man seems to ask ‘why does the manager want to see me?’

Now to a device that I have been using, the Nokia 5330 TV special. It’s not a phone for the geeks or phone craze people but what it has is the DVB-H TV receiver at a very affordable price. Now 15,000 bob or $188 at any shop in Nairobi or other Kenyan towns. While it has no WLAN, HSDPA, GPS, no preinstalled document viewer, no smart calling, poor video recording; for its price the benefit from its use is worthwhile.

For me watching the 2010 world cup on this device was pure gold and I have no qualms with it on this front.

It appears that the Nokia guys are testing it and will before long launch hopefully a better version that will certainly not hang while surfing the net. That was one of my biggest problem with this device and I hope that is improved.

It’s that time of the year when you review what has been, how it was done and if you are going to do it again you would probably say what Bart Simpson would say ‘I don’t know! I don’t know why I did it, I don’t know why I enjoyed it, and I don’t know why I’ll do it again!

Well you went and bought that gadget after being promised that it’s what you want and that it does more than you think.

Sometime ago a dude sent me a comment saying that people from east africa and Kenya in particular are only interested in talking on their mobile phones. Why would you sell mobile applications to them who would buy? Well as it turns out many have bought the idea and like a watering hole people in the tech industry are flocking into Kenya to get a piece of the action.

We seem to be inventing and reinventing mobile applications and as the fibre optical cable slowly sips into our psyche, soon more applications that are web based will start emerging from the street of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala, Dar,….. and other towns in the region.

So yes you will do it again because that gadget made a big difference since it had that special application. I have been asked to give my top must buy gadgets for this festive season. Well I will give you more and tell you what you should have and share with your loved ones or even better show off next year before its becomes so last season.

MY FIRST AND TOP is that you should have SIM card that mobile money transfer option enabled. MPESA, ZAP and OBOPAY have made life so easy. You can buy, pay or even carry money as you travel. And what is even better most pubs now accept payment by this mode.

Second is any gadget that has any form of solar kit for recharging its battery. There are several in the shop so get of the couch and burn off those calories as you shop around.

Third is a wonderful gadget. The HTC Hero mobile phone. It is the best phone in the world according to ME. Other people have the option of disagreeing with me outside this blog my blog hahaha….. anyway the HTC Hero mobile phone is the best designed and complete android device in the world now and it beats the Iphone 3G hands down….. did I hear a word out there ….. So you think Iphone 3G is better well that’s you opion but HTC Hero rules.

The fourth thingy in the market, Yes fourth since the Iphone 3G took third and I have no problemo with that is the Nokia N900.  Now we seem to have a problem here where the manufacturer says it’s not a mobile phone but it’s more a mobile computer. Well its better than their current flag ship N97 and its faster and … its just a good mobile device and I would buy it to floss around. Well ist actually the MEAMO 5 operating system that stole my heart.  You can say that about gadgets ‘the Iphone stole my heart’ mmmm

Fifth are three phones that have the outstanding design, connectivity and you will not get disappointed with any of the three. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 which has an improved processor giving it fantastic speed; the new LG BL40 Chocolate is quite sweet. It has the sweetest design in the market has a full wide-screen 21:9 a first in the world. And finally it’s the Nokia 5530 Xpress, it has touch screen and it’s the unsung hero for the Finnish mobile maker for year 2009.

Finally this is the best mobile phone network in Kenya. It has MPESA, it boasts of the cheapest calling rate called AMUA, being on the net is soooo cheap and sweet like orange juice and my god its has the strongest network making it’s a wonderful world.

Seasons greetings to you all

I was to wait and see what our good mobile phone companies would do to make our lives all jolly during this time of give give give and spend.

Well nothing really surprising from any. I like quiet and not the yad yad yad that is synonymous with us Kenyans. We like talking and getting money for free especially during this time. So when someone tells me that you can win lots of money for just talking, no brother or sister of mine would resist such an offer.  However no one seems to like my suggestion so heres is what the networks are offering you, nothing exciting  all  drub  and  yawn.

The big Cahuna for now a Mr. Safaricom is slashing its prices on the gadgets like a Nokia N97 going for 45k fancy that anyone?

zain what can you say about them ?????   well am still waiting for a reply on my request for rewards points. Its now two weeks and nothing to cheer about.

Orange ——————————- yap. The 0ne bob thing is over. get used to that.

so maybe I should AMUA and live with calling people for 6 bob across networks for now. It works for me and even their charges for surfing is quite cool and cheap. May be Essar should become  EASY.  mmmm YU powered by Easy mmmmm

The Tana River begins from the foot of Mt. Kenya and weaves its way down on the eastern part of Kenya all the way to the coast near Malindi. At one of its crossing is the gate way to the town of Garissa. It has been called the capital city of the Somali people and in deed the vibrancy of the town is evident immediately you cross the river.

It takes you about four and a half hours to get to Garissa from Nairobi. The road there is rather good but the scenery becomes very boring after one hour. You get to see the same kind of tree over and over again. From a distance everyone as the popular song says ‘looks the same’ well the Camels look more the same on close up. As such you have to get something to read or do. And testing the various apps and battery duration of the nokia N96 became a good choice.

One thing I have to commend the mobile networks is that I was constantly in the networks throughout the journey. I did not experience a drop on frequency or even static noise.

So I decided to be online and chat with some folks. One thing about the N96 is the way it automatically to your set access point. This is even when you change sim cards. Unlike other devices the N96 is able to identify with the sim card and does a connection to the net. Simple things that make the phone easy. Well after chatting for some two hours my guys went mute. Apparently its quite cheap to be online with Zain. I ended up using only 27 bob on chatting and simple surfing about 9 bob over the 2 hour I was online.

The N-Gage games is must experience for any user of this devices. The thing it does is to connect you with a community of gamers on the net where you get options to download a free trial, share your online status, and play games with any people around the world.

You could always purchase the game you mostly like and come up with various players from anywhere. Being a dude Asphalt 4 was my choice and I did play till my battery started show the low battery sign. So after about three hours of being on line and playing games the battery conked out. The device aesthetics has really improved but due to its fast processor and the application the Finish phone maker forgot about the power source. The phone is great to handle and all but when you loose power very fast it becomes a let down.

However all is not lost because them guys in MIT have developed a new way to manufacture batteries that can be recharged in seconds.

Well when someone takes such long trips you need to archive memories. The camera was not a let down and its automatic features make it to change the picture quality in this harshest of places.

The heat of this area did not seem to affect the performance the device and I must say. The average temps of 90 degrees Fahrenheit so imagine. As for the other features you need to buy to experience. My verdict it’s a good buy if you are a multimedia fellow

It’s always interesting to hear about what people think about zee Germans. They may be a ‘little’ bit dull but what you must agree with me is that their engineering compensates for their dreary demeanor. Take the Mercedes Benz, not only does it project power, it’s under currents extenuates sensuality with a tint of torque. So boys imagine what it would do to attract the opposite sex. Mmmm

Exactly and that’s the same response I got from the Nokia N96. Apart from the Sirocco the giant Finnish mobile maker has for a while been handy and sturdy devices that had a male feel to them. But with the Asians coming up with cool looking gadgets, it has been a surprising time for me as I get a barrage of inviting comments on the Nokia N96.

Compared to its predecessor the N95, the N96 lives up to how the Finnish people appear to most people boring. However do not let appears cloud you judgment. The clicky twiky plastic noises that were associated with the N95 are not there. The key pad does not have the grooves that are in the N95, its flat and smooth on the N96 almost feels like touch screen.

The screen is bigger and quality is brilliant. If you are a movie buff the installed Transformers Movie is a good test for you. For a 2.8 inch screen the birate/video quality is good and disappointment is minimal if any.

However you may not be able to make a call if you do finish the film.

Apart from improving the memory and adding a DVB-H tuner the device also has other cool features like a 5 mega pixel camera with geo tagging functionality (Via GPS). When enabled it automatically tags the images with the GPS location coordinates, which you can later use when sorting the pictures on your PC or online photo service.

Nokia N96 also comes with 16 GB of built-in flash memory and microSDHC memory card slot, where you can fit 8 GB memory card for a total of 24GB of storage.

With all this improved features I did get a lot of attention from many ladies and I got wondering? Does the N96 emit any pheromones?

The ladies seem jazzed about the device may be boring is actually sexy

It’s always cool when you get to be in the centre of a big launch. The grapevine had initially told me in no certain terms that Nokia would be unveiling its touch screen device to the market. So what better way to get to see this new innovation, but by leaving my sunny Nairobi to the now cold city of Barcelona.

Apart from the Nokia World Event taking place there. Annsi Vanjoki Nokia’s guru in marketing laid out an impressive presentation of the journey towards the latest Nokia N97.
It is a device and a half in fact it’s not just a mobile device but a mobile computer. It will come with a 3.5 inch touch display combined with a tilt out full qwerty keyboard and will run the latest version of the Symbian S60.

Looking at it from a distance gave me the chills but holding the prototypes first hand made the experience awesome.
It has the little things that make the Finish devices always a notch ahead of the game. The N97 will be fully compatible with the OVI services and is extremely fast.
Being the top brand the N97 will undoubtedly come with all the likely connections on earth.

Its has an inbuilt memory of 32GB and can be expanded to 64GB, the camera is 5megapixel Carl zeiss terssa lens.

As the fast mobile computer the N97 has the largest battery found on a mobile phone. With the processing power used the phone should have plenty of juice to run.

Holding the phone, I found it remarkably light. The weight is approximately 150gramme and the keyboard was a joy to use. The phone will hit the markets in the first half of 2009 and will retail at 550 euros or 55,000 bob.

Is it a phone you should by, am saving; oh the Nokia World Party was a blast.

When apple came up with the Iphone the touch screen ‘thingy’ was the rave. I call it ‘thingy’ since just this morning while buying some airtime at a phone outlet, I over heard an animated conversation between a well mannered sales lady and a very eager teenage boy who was either I think trying to get a date and impress the lady with his gadgetology  or do both.

Holding his current phone he explained to the lady what kind and why his next phone should be.

‘I like a phone that has the touch thingy’ said the boy

‘You mean touch screen facility?’ asked the lady

‘Yeah that so what do you have?’ boy

‘We have the LG Viewty, Samsung F480…….

At this point I let them go on. Any way Nokia has joined the list of touch screen devices.

The Nokia 5800 Xpress comes with high resolution resistive touch screen with stylus input and  tactile feedback.

The device has a 3.2 mega pixel camera with 35 hours of music on a multi format player.

The 5800 is available in three versions: the European HSDPA, North American HSDPA and the GSM only.

The first shipment of the device will be in this quarter. Expect the black, blue and red packed in the boxes.

The phone has all the requirements associated with any device from Helsinki. In-fact this is the forth major overhaul of what has come to be known as the tube in the smart phone platform.

The phone runs on the fifth edition of S60 and will be on 3.5G

I can not say much about it since like you am shopping for one. As for the damage this phone will set you back about 28k

It was an exciting olympics I must say; … that is if you are kenyan. The team was simply amaizing.

Out of nothing they produced a magical performance that left all Kenyans grinning and smiling from east to west. Well speaking of amaizing stuff those guys in Finland have been thick as thieves coming up with new devices that may be as good as their former devices.

The N series has just added two new devices into their stable. The N79 and the N85. Lets first begin with the N79.

This device comes with the traditional candy from but according to the manufacturer it is suppossed to pack lots and lots.

It comes with a full set of multimedia experiences that includes integrated navigation, music with FM transmitter, high speed connectivity WLAN 1EEE 802.11g with UPnP support and runs on HSPDA and EGPRS. The internal memory is up to 50MB and a 4 GB microSD memory card. Talk time is 210min while on 3G and 330min on GSM.

As for the N85 the device is a slider talk time is rather good at 270min while on 3G and 410 min on GSM. The internal memory is 74 MB ahile the microSD memory card comes at 8GB yes EIGHT!!!

It is quite light at 128 grams. This device pack more of N79 but it brags of better speeds and better style and form.

Well I am in the process of experiencing both and I shall let you know if its worth that bonus. Oh nearly forgot their cameras are good. Carl Zeiss Tessar 5 megapixels.

Expected damage N79 Kshs 34,000 and for the N85 44,000 that excludes taxes.

Sometime ago I did come across an LG Viewty phone. Initially I did not know where to place the phone. Is it a gaming device like the Sony Ericsson Xperia or is it multimedia phone like the Nokia N series. Well most people are placing it simply as a 5-megapixel phone.

Undoubtedly this is one of the best phones to come out of the LG electronics stable. The phone has the new fad of a touch screen interface.

What the LG Viewty can brag about more than its superb 5 megapixel camera with auto focus xenon flash it can….. Upload your video straight into YouTube.

The Viewty has a proprietary Web browser which my friends reckon it is one of the best they have seen in the mobile world. Since they are iPhone aficionados the claim it’s similar to the iPhone’s browser final.

The Viewty allows you to view in full size web pages and you can always zoom in on particular sections of a page that you fancy a magnified view.

The Viewty is 3G (HSDPA (3.5G)) and so with the laws of internet and the web, you should be able to download pages at 1.8Mbps which as you know is fast broadband fast.

So for you who like the wonderful artistry of full portraits on the net expect to spend a lot for that privilege.

For now the Viewty can hold the same ground as a Nokia N95 which comes with GPS and Wi-Fi , or the Samsung G600 which is very slim or the Sony Ericsson K850i  all having 5 megapixel cameras.

LG says that the talk time battery life at 355 minutes using GSM only and 233 minutes using 3G only, and standby time at 434 hours using GSM and 454 hours using 3G. Rather good I would say

The LG KU990 Viewty is an impressive phone, well stylish camera phone, actually many digital cameras look bad. I would place iPhone 3G as the best touch screen interface phone closely followed by the LG Viewty and for that me like it. Nokia says September it will be launching its touch screen phone lets see if they will play to LG Viewty.

So when should you expect it. Officially its being launched on the 30th July, 2008 but I have seen it on the beautiful shops of Nairobi.

Damage over 30k.
